Decorating for Fall: Animal Horns

Fall is one of our favorite times of the year, as the days get a little shorter, the air a little crisper, and we start to see the first glimpses of leaves starting to change colors. We aren't big seasonal decorators, but there is something cozy about using animal horns in a room. They are sculpturally beautiful and add an organic element to a room.

They certainly make this ikea bookshelf seem less ikea-like.

After a particularly intense run last night , I realized it had been embarrassingly long since I'd bought new running shoes. After all, I'd much rather buy real shoes- ones with heels! But I decided it was time to bite the bullet, so online I went to sniff out the best deal on Asics, my brand of choice. And I was reminded of a great site I'd stumbled upon a few months ago- 6pm.com. And not too much longer, these 50% off Asics were on their way to me. Name brand, current-season shoes for $42? Ok!

I first stumbled upon 6pm in the spring when looking for a dress- they had the exact same French Connection dress I was eyeing at Bloomingdales, but on 6pm it was 50% off! And in poking around a bit more on 6pm last night, I was shocked to see that their brands run from the everyday (Asics, Steve Madden, Sperry) to the upscale (BCBG, French Connection, Theory, Lilly Pulitzer, Nanette Lepore, Botkier) to the luxurious (Missoni, Vivienne Westwood, Lanvin, Vera Wang, Derek Lam, See by Chloe). A few of my favorite picks...

This Missoni Scarf is perfect for fall. They have a ton of styles and colors to choose from!

These Missoni pumps aren't exactly chump change at $570, but admittedly it's better than the regular price of $950. And in a pinch, you could definitely used those heels as a weapon.

They've got a TON of Lilly Pulitzer- tees, tops, skirts, dresses, accessories. I love this Printed Eliot Shirt with a coral motif- would be a fun cover up to throw on with white jeans at the beach. And of course, one can never have too many striped shirts!

I'm incredibly tempted by this fabulous Bale Sundress by Vivienne Westwood- they have a great selection of her pieces for under $500. Doesn't the silver and gold Twist dress have the holidays written all over it?

They've got a fantastic selection of moderately priced Trina Turk- a lot of which I remember seeing in stores not too long ago! The Davey Coat could take you into fall, and this Danica Blouse would pair well with black cigarette pants and a pashmina come holiday parties.

Loving this metallic silver Kate Spade Wellie Bag- the bow really adds that special touch.

I got awfully depressed when I realized that as of yesterday, my pool is closed for the season. But this striking St John gold-trimmed bathing suit could have me looking forward to spring.

J Crew is telling us that high heeled oxfords are in this fall- brings me back to the high heeled Nine West penny loafers I wore on my first day of high school! These Via Spiga Danielles bring you the look- with a hit of bootie influence- without breaking the bank.

Take a spin around 6pm and let us know if you find anything! It helps to look at the list of brands and go from there, as just looking at the "shirts" category will bring up 6,898 hits. Literally. And not all brands on the site is as upscale as, say, Bluefly (beware, there is Ed Hardy lurking in some categories). But, in turn, the savings are definitely more substantial than Bluefly, and the selection is heads and shoulders above the clothing on Overstock or Smartbargains. Happy shopping!

A Jan Showers-Inspired DIY Gold Floor Lamp

One of my favorite characteristics of rooms designed by Texas designer Jan Showers is her use of gold to create a glamorous look.

Whether a mirror, a piece of furniture, or a light fixture, so many of her breathtaking rooms include touches of gold.

Inspired by her beautiful metallic lamps above, I have been on the hunt for an attractive gold floor lamp. I have always loved the Niermann Weeks Montaigne Lamp, but the $2910 price tag is just a tad too rich for my blood.

A more reasonable alternative is Circa Lighting's Quatrefoil Floor Lamp. But still, its $630 price tag is a little tough to swallow.

So I decided to go on a (brief) mission to find an affordable and attractive gold floor lamp. As I have learned, that is no small feat. So many floor lamps are just plain hideous. After looking and looking, out of desperation I headed upstairs to my attic to see if I had anything that might work. I had forgotten about a lamp I used in my law school apartment. I hadn't used it in ages, as the dark bronzey metal doesn't really reflect my taste.

But while the color and shade aren't my favorite, I do like the lines and details of the lamp itself. It is well-made and heavy, and the wiring is still in great shape.

So I decided to paint it gold. I used Rustoleum gold spray paint. If you need a good gold spray paint, definitely use Rustoleum. I've tried Krylon before, but Krylon gold is way too pink. (For what it's worth, I think I would choose Rustoleum over Krylon in any color).

I started with the finial, in case the spray paint proved to be a disaster. But I liked how it turned out on the finial, bringing out the texture of the metal on the lamp.

So I kept going. It took very little of my gold spray paint (maybe 1/4 of a can).

It looks like a different lamp.

I also decided to swap out the dark shade on the left for something lighter and more rectangular, to mirror the rectangular base of the lamp.

And the finished product! It's just what I need behind a comfy armchair in my living room.

I feel quite certain Jan Showers would not approve of using Rustoleum to infuse a room with gold. But it enabled me to bring new life to an outdated lamp that had been collecting dust in my attic, and it also provided a very inexpensive end to my search for a pretty gold floor lamp.

I did this project from start to finish in about 15 minutes after we got back from a fun Labor Day weekend at the beach (after a seemingly LONG car ride from Isle of Palms to Charlotte with a teething baby). When I posted about my gold-encrusted geode being the easiest DIY ever, I was wrong. This definitely has to be the easiest DIY project ever, to the extent that I maintain some concern that I am insulting the intelligence of MoS readers by posting this. But, ultimately I decided to post it just in case you need a little nudge to update that hidden treasure in your attic, whether it's a new coat of paint, some slick new hardware, or an updated lampshade.

Happy Friday, everyone! Cannot believe Labor Day weekend is already here. Where did summer go? I'm excited at the thought of starting to break out some fall clothes, but considering it's still 90 degrees out, that day might not be terribly imminent.

A few random thoughts for today...

1) Went to Mac Fabrics the other day in West Palm Beach, Florida- if you live in the area and haven't been, you MUST go. I've always just loved perusing their fabrics, seeing what's "in", and enjoying the fact that a lot of what they carry is just so fun and Florida-ish. Unlike a lot of fabric stores, they actually have a great selection of fabrics in stock and ready to be cut right then and there. I only WISH the Washington area had a great fabric store like this (if anyone knows of one, I'm all ears, and please don't say G Street, ha).

I know that red coral branches have gotten kind of played, but gosh, this was just so striking.

I loved these "natural history" themed fabrics- the graphics remind me of old prints. The animals on the bottom is my favorite!

Interestingly enough, I remember about 10 years ago when Mac Fabrics was full of toile- and the other day I don't think I noticed a single toile! It must be "out", though I'll always love a good chionoiserie toile. And I'm sure it will be back.

2) While in Florida I dragged my mom to a couple more thrift stores and she actually made the great find of the week- this amazing elephant planter for only $4.99! It looks perfect in her sunroom, doesn't it?

3) The Washington Design Center Sample Sale is coming up on October 9th and I am SO excited to finally attend. It's from 10am to 3pm. Even if you don't plan to purchase anything, it's still so interesting to walk through the design center and get inspired. Since it's usually only open to the trade, this is a great chance to peek inside!

MoS Obsessions: Animal Prints for Fall

As always, one of our favorite Fall accessories involves an animal print. Leopard in particular is huge this fall and is the perfect way to add a little fun to your outfit. While the thought of wearing an animal print might make you a little nervous, it truly can be done tastefully. For example, Jackie Kennedy wore this leopard-print coat while serving as First Lady. Can you imagine the comments if a First Lady today took such a risk?!

The Thrill of the Chase at a Church Attic Sale

Last Saturday morning, I was running some errands, and while driving past a church near my house, I saw a big sign out front, "HUGE ATTIC SALE, 7:00- Noon. Proceeds benefit Haiti." It wasn't much past 7 a.m. (baby boy rises before the rooster), so I decided to pull in and check it out. Providence Methodist is a large church- I'd guess they have several thousand members, and the attic sale consisted of donations from church members. My husband has suggested that we visit before, but I just can't seem to break away from my Calvinist roots. So although I drive past this church at least twice a day, I had never stepped inside until Saturday.

You never know what you're going to find at a church attic sale. As I walked towards the door, I felt certain I would be in and out within 5 minutes. Boy was I wrong. The Methodists run this sale like a well-oiled machine. They had every department, from the ladies boutique to bake sale mapped out, charted, and color coded, and everywhere you turned were "guides" to help you find your way (was that a metaphor?). This was an attic sale on a MASSIVE scale, unlike anything I've ever seen before.

I wish I had taken more pictures while I was there, but I too caught up in the excitement. One good thing about a church sale is that everyone is really nice- no pushing, shoving, or elbow-throwing. And the best part is that everything had been donated by church members, so 100% of the sales proceeds went towards relief efforts in Haiti. One volunteer told me that the volunteers were allowed to shop the night before the sale, and this pre-sale event raised over $14,000.

I decided to forgo the clothes, children's items, exercise gear, etc and just head straight for the household goods. The household section was a huge room (fellowship hall?) full of shelf after shelf stacked with lamps, bookends, fabric by the yard, mirrors and art, lampshades, silver serving pieces, and more china than a department store. And this was just the tip of the iceberg. This photo I hurriedly sent MoS Washington is not at all indicative of what I found Saturday morning.

As soon as I walked in, a large brass lamp caught my eye. It was beautiful, heavy, and etched with chinoiserie scenes on both sides. I picked it up with one hand, hanging on to my full can of Diet Coke in my other hand (I'm a bit superstitious this way. If I go digging empty-handed I won't find a thing, but if take a full drink, I'll inevitably find something fabulous and have to throw out my drink in order to carry my treasures to the car).

After the lamp, I then saw a beautiful crystal pineapple with brass leaves and a heavy brass leafy dish. Time to throw out the Diet Coke and use both hands.

A brightly colored tin canister caught my eye, with enameled butterflies and flora. It was marked that it was made in England, so I decided to pick it up.

Then I spotted a small silver revere bowl, a vintage ice bucket with a silver handle, and a brass sailboat. All of a sudden I could no longer hold everything with my two hands. It was time to stake out a place to pile my treasures. A nice volunteer said she would watch over my pile while I continued to dig. My pulse was racing- this was my idea of a fun Saturday morning.

I headed over to the linens section, which was jam-packed with everything from tables of unfinished needlepoint projects to designer fabrics still on the bolt, to custom swags and jabots, pillows, and cloth napkins by the stack. I decided on a few sewing notions, beautiful yellow trellis fabric, two vintage crewel pillows, and a fabulous island-y vintage linen hand towel.

In the bathroom section I found a fabulous Hollywood Regency gold faux bamboo tray, soap dish, and toothbrush cup. I think I'll break up the set and use the tray elsewhere in my house.

Then, a crystal powder dish with a monogrammed silver lid and an antique magnifying mirror caught my eye. They will be perfect in my bathroom!

Back to the silver section, I found a set of iced tea spoons and the most unique toast rack I've ever seen.

Moving on to the kitchen area, I picked up this old decanter (it includes Prohibition-Era language etched on the bottom), a vintage cocktail shaker with a fabulous bakelite handle, and this adorable little lobster bottle opener for my husband who says I never buy him anything when I go dig.

In the garden section I found this pair of green tole bamboo lamps.

And last but not least was this copper tree frog mailbox for our front porch (also for my husband, who loves frogs).

Knowing that my pile in the corner would probably fill up my backseat, I decided to head home without spending time in the other areas of the sale. Did I miss out on another vintage Pucci or DVF? Probably... But there's always next time! All in all, that was a great Saturday morning!

J Crew does Fall (with a few laughs thrown in)

The J. Crew fall catalog hit mailboxes last week and I finally got around to sitting down and giving it a thorough read the other night. I also happened to go into a J. Crew store today and picked up an armload of pre-fall essentials- as usual this season does not disappoint!

Of course, you know that the MoS Girls are and shall ever be J. Crew devotees (team Jenna!). But, we couldn't help but notice a few (unintentionally) humorous elements of newest catalog...not to mention, I think that the intensely overstyled Crewcuts will need its own post one of these days. Here's a quick look at our picks and pans for fall.

1) Skinnygirl

J Crew's brought the Pixie and Minnie pants back in a major way- I bought this italian wool pair in super-flattering stretch wool- these will go anywhere. Also picked up the denim stretch pixie pants with front vertical zippers (not yet online) which I can already tell will be a going out staple once the weather turns cool.

I also LOVED this fierce zippered pair, though had to admit they were a bit less practical...they look great on though. Will keep them on sale watch...

2) Forget Zoolander

This dude stopped me mid page-turn. Is that Jesus? The guy from Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes? Regardless, it's kind of a nice change from the usual can't-grow-a-beard hipsters they feature.

3) Are we doing this now?

Thigh-highs? Really?

Though I did like them here...

4) Marabou Coup

I have to applaud J Crew for their innovation...normally when one thinks of marabou this is the first thing that comes to mind...

But this marabou jacket is incredibly awesome! Looks like a hipper version of fur. Sold out online, even at $1200 a pop.

5) Party like it's 1997

I did a double take when I saw that J Crew is offering Addidas Sambas for men and children. These remind me soooo much of high school...perhaps the World Cup has brought soccer-inspired fashion back to the forefront, but gah, all they do for me is bring back flashbacks of my 11th grade boyfriend! What's next- will J Crew be peddling Oasis CD's?

6) Bass Flashbacks

In elementary and middle school, I had a strict uniform dress code...back to school usually meant a trip to the Bass outlet where I picked out new penny loafers or bucks. I get nostalgic over that green Bass tag that bedecked the side of all their shoes! Thus I am just DYING to see some hipster walking down the street wearing these GH Bass penny loafers (and these are women's, believe it or not). It all comes full circle...

And Jesus is even modeling bluchers, also a staple of my elementary school wardrobe. (Am I the only one who thinks of David Spade here? "America's favorite president." "Who is Ronald Regan?" "A casual shoe for yachting." "What is a blucher?")

7) Glasses Galore

I'll admit it, the "geek glasses" trend is really growing on me. I have total glasses envy- I've never had to wear them and I am just DYING for a pair (though not necessarily for the vision impairment that necessitates them). I love this variation in tortoise. Can't find them online yet though...but these are GREAT glasses for men.

However, I'm less sure about the Selima Optique collection for CrewCuts. It seems a bit...tragic? unholy?...to be peddling designer sunglesses to kids.

And had I asked my parents for $80 aviators when I was 8, I'm pretty sure the answer wouldn't have been favorable.

So those are our initial thoughts- more to come, we're sure! What are your picks for fall from the new J. Crew catalog?

DIY Gold-Encrusted Agate Bookends

I've told you before about my childhood love for the Nature Company, rock tumblers, and saving my allowance for a purchase at the Schiele Museum gift shop. Generally speaking, however, these items don't really fit into my adult lifestyle. But when I first saw these Eduardo Garza pink quartz bookends, it was love at first sight. Then I saw the $875 price tag. Truly, they are absolutely beautiful works of art. But gosh, they are way out of my league. Or are they?

I wanted to replicate the Garza bookends, but before actively seeking out some pink quartz, I decided to do a trial run on something I already owned. A pair of purple agate bookends in my den would be perfect. I bought them a few years ago for around $15. They aren't too special, but I do like them. They add a nice organic element to my bookshelf (and keep my inner rock collecting tendencies satisfied).

The purple inside the rock is pretty enough, but the brown "shell" around the outside of the bookend leaves a little something to be desired.

I bought some Liquid Leaf gold paint at Michaels. It was very inexpensive- around $3 if I remember correctly (and you can always find a 40-50% off coupon online to print out and take with you to Michael's).

I did a test patch of the gold paint at first. I wasn't sure if the porous rock would absorb it completely, but it seemed to work!

So I went to painting.

It took a couple of coats to cover the rock, but it was really easy.

Ready to go!

What a nice change from the dull brown before! I didn't mount it on a brass base like Garza, but that might be on my list when I locate some pink quartz.

This is probably the easiest DIY project ever- definitely give it a shot. The gold adds a welcome touch of glamour to my bookshelf!

Furniture 101: Bergere Chair

Today's installation of Furniture 101 takes us back to the 18th century. Perhaps this is basic knowledge for some of you, but to me, I didn't realize until recently how timeless the bergere chair has remained over the last three centuries. Of course, it's evolved greatly over that time, and there are varying styles of bergere, and fabrics can play a huge part in the overall look. But when you think about it, there are few decorative elements that are widely used today that are so stylistically rooted in the era of Louis XV. In looking at the painting below, clearly few of us would go for the style of a gilt rococo clock or a full length wall tapestry, but the bergere- most of us would gladly take those!

To go back to its origins (thanks in part to Wikipedia, of course) - a bergère, or "shepherdess chair" is an enclosed upholstered French armchair (fauteuil) with an upholstered back and armrests on upholstered frames. The seat frame is over-upholstered, but the rest of the wooden framing is exposed: it may be moulded or carved, and of beech painted or gilded or of fruitwood, walnut or mahogany with a waxed finish. Padded elbowrests may stand upon the armrests. A bergère is fitted with a loose, but tailored, seat cushion. It is designed for lounging in comfort, with a deeper wider seat than that of a regular fauteuil. A bergère in the eighteenth century was essentially a meuble courant, designed to be moved about to suit convenience, rather than being ranged permanently formally along the walls as part of the decor.

Appearing first in Paris during the Régence (1715-23), the form reaches its full development in the unifying curves of the rococo style, then continues in a more architectural rectilinear style in the Louis XVI, Directoire, and French and American Empire styles.

Bonus points for recognizing the room that houses these well-known bergere chairs...

MoS Obsessions: Matta Scarves

One of my favorite sources of fashion inspiration (and education!) is the Capitol blog. Carrying lines from Azzedine Alaia to YSL, Balenciaga to Zac Posen, Capitol, a boutique here in Charlotte, is the preeminent source of high fashion in the South (sorry, Jeffrey devotees, but it's true). The talented ladies at Capitol have their fingers on the pulse of what is happening in the fashion world. Their blog provides an interesting insight into the world of operating such a unique business, from spotting trends at Fashion Weeks around the world, to finding inspiration in Southern small towns, to opening boxes of designer shoes and clothes for the store with excitement and anticipation. The Capitol blog has introduced me to some designers and lines with which I wasn't previously familiar, including Matta, a fabulous line of billowy scarves designed by New Yorker Christina Gitti.

I first learned about Matta scarves when Ruth, a buyer for Capitol, wrote a fascinating blog post about her most recent whirlwind buying trip to New York. As part of her busy day in NYC, Ruth popped down to the Matta headquarters in Soho, where she picked out an array of colorful scarves for Capitol. Her Matta visit caught my eye, as I am always on the hunt for a colorful, lightweight scarf.

Aren't the colors beautiful? My favorite thing about the Matta Dupatta is the pom-pom trim that is continuous around all four sides of the scarf.

The Dupatta, made of cotton and silk, is so versatile and chic- use it as a daytime scarf, a sarong at the beach or pool, a blanket when traveling, or over your shoulders at an evening wedding.

The Matta folks head to India every few months in search of inspiration by the colors, textures, spices, and sounds of the country.

A Matta scarf is just perfect for those upcoming divinely cool days of fall, when you need a little something around your neck or shoulders, but it's not quite time for a heavy winter coat. My favorite color is Poppy.

Cloud is beautiful as well.

Ikea Hack: DIY "Brass" Sawhorse Desks

MoS Charlotte and I have made no secret of our affinity for sawhorse desks. They're not only classic and chic, but when done with a glass top, they have the added bonus of not being too visually imposing in a room. And best of all, as we discovered, you can do them on the cheap. If this Williams Sonoma version is within your budget, then more power to you...

But if you're not looking to spend four digits on a desk, don't fret. We captured this look for less than you'd pay for shipping on the Williams Sonoma desk! Here's how.

First- get the glass. MoS Charlotte purchased her glass at Ikea- I believe for around $79. However, I purchased my beveled glass top on Craigslist for around $50- and for a beveled piece of glass, that's an absolute steal- much less than what you'd pay at a glass company. So, we'd recommend scouring Craigslist, but if you come up empty handed, then there's always Ikea to fall back on (though theirs isn't beveled). You may want to call around to local glass companies too (the more in the 'burbs they are, the cheaper they will be).

Second, source the legs. I wanted metal legs, so I selected the Vika Lerberg trestle from Ikea. $10/each, but I got the ugly red ones that were on sale for even less. Assembled, they look like this:

Step three- as is the case with most of our favorite DIY projects, this one involves (metallic) spray paint. Get out your Krylon and go to town (I painted the legs before I assembled them. I think in hindsight, it might be easier to paint them after assembly). You can see the before and after with the red legs here. I used Krylon Metallic Gold. It actually gave the metal legs the exact look of brass. You could certainly use silver if you wanted a chrome look here.

Here's the finished product in my room. The desk provides a ton of workspace, but the glass top keeps the space unobtrusive. And my $5 Craigslist chair provides some whimsy.

No, I'm not exceptionally vain for putting a mirror in front of my desk...it's so I can see the TV that is situated on the other side of the room behind the desk!

And here's MoS Charlotte's finished project in her room. Even though she painted on wooden legs rather than metal, I think the result is equally impressive!

Monday's Cheap and Chic: Ralph Lauren Red Pagoda

Without a doubt, online shopping has made life easier, especially when it comes to buying things like wedding gifts. You can go straight from a wedding website to an online registry to purchasing a gift to be sent to the happy couple with just a couple of mouse clicks. You don't even need to know their mailing address!

But every now and then, it's nice to go into a real brick-and-mortar store and walk around and see things in person. I did just that this weekend. I went to Belks to pick up a wedding gift, and a pretty red-and-white plate caught my eye. The pattern is by Ralph Lauren (I didn't even realize he did china?) and is called Red Pagoda. I am in love with the red bamboo trellis! The Red Pagoda will fit right in with my basic white Williams-Sonoma Apilco everyday china.

It also comes in a red background. The price is great- Belks was having a sale, so my salad plates were around $16 each.

Every so often, I like to give my dinner table a little pick-me-up. It can be as simple as some new salad plates.

And Red Pagoda will make me happy while I continue to dream of these.
