The Art of the Scarf

Have you mastered the art of the scarf?  I can usually make it work with an oblong rectangular scarf, but when it comes to wearing a square scarf around my neck, I am lost.

I have this silk Chanel scarf that my granddaddy brought from France years ago.

It is beautiful, but when I put it on, I feel like a flight attendant.

I spotted this picture on Pinterest, with the corner of the scarf front and center, and I think maybe this is the secret.
Hermès scarves doing double duty...

Here is a similar style- it's almost like wearing a necklace.

I think another key is wearing a silk scarf with casual clothes, like jeans and a tee shirt, so they don't seem too fussy.

Do you wear square silk scarves?  How do you style them ?

MoS Marketplace- Fabric Sale!

My fabric closet is quickly becoming a baby closet, since I need a place to hang all those sweet Kissy Kissy onesies!  I have listed almost all of my fabric for next to nothing- much less than I paid.  You can see it all on MoS Marketplace here!   If it doesn't sell, it's all getting donated (like the carload of stuff I donated Saturday- I am definitely nesting....)

There is some Kelly Wearstler, Brunschwig, Quadrille, Kravet, Thom Filicia, Ralph Lauren, etc.  I took pictures really quickly as I was going through everything, so if you have any questions, you can email me at mattersofstyle@gmail.com.  Since everything is priced so low, I am not able to cut pieces.

FREE SHIPPING on all fabric!!

Weekend Find!

I am possibly more excited about this weekend find than any other!

At long last, I finally found a Sarreid brass chest!  These are so hard to find- I've been on the hunt for one forever.  It is such a fab piece- needs a little polish, but it is lined with wood and in great condition, perfect for a coffee table.  The drawers are nice for storage, and it has modern nailhead detailing.  I think my heart skipped a beat when I opened the drawer and saw that Sarreid label inside.

(I grabbed a quick pic as it was being loaded into my car!)

$800.  If you are interested before it goes to One Kings Lane, email me at mattersofstyle@gmail.com.

Black and White and Red All Over

Do you love the iconic Scalamandre zebra pattern as much as I do?  Although I personally would use it in a heartbeat, adding the wallpaper to your home is a big commitment, both financially and style-wise.

But there is good news!  Scalamandre has recently partnered with Lenox to create some fabulous offerings in their classic zebra pattern that are easier on your checkbook than rolls of wallpaper.

How fun is this porcelain catch-all tray?  And you can't beat the price- makes a great gift!
These old fashioned glasses are a chic addition to any bar.

This bone china charger would make a statement on a dining room table!

And outside of the Lenox partnership, Scalamandre still sells some classic zebra pieces on their own site.  (I wish they made stationary!!)

I have always loved this tote with rope handles.  Such a fun throw-around bag.

The pillows come in all of the colorways and are only $100 each.  That is definitely more economical than buying the fabric and having them made.

And I am still pining for that umbrella to brighten up those rainy days.

If you have seen the Scalamandre/ Lenox collection in person, I would love to hear your thoughts on the quality!

Decorating with Ginger Jars

Ginger jars are one of my favorite accessories for styling a room.  Although you can find them in every color of the rainbow, the classic blue and white is my favorite.  Even if you are not using a blue-and-white color scheme in the room, blue and white ginger jars add a classic elegance to any space.  From a bookshelf to a dining room table, ginger jars are timeless and versatile, and they blend with many different styles.

Tuesday Find!

Although MJ Trim has been sold out of their Greek key trim for a while, Calico Corners has theirs on sale here for $9 a yard!

DECORATIVE TRIM 2 1/2" TAPE 009 92754
This is the 2.5-inch trim, which is a wonderful, substantial size.  1-inch trim can get lost in a sea of curtains, so I really prefer this width.   It looks so fabulous on the leading edge of a curtain panel.  It's also great to add as an inset border to pillows.  Did I mention it comes in a varied selection of colorways?

DECORATIVE TRIM 2 1/2" TAPE 414 92764
DECORATIVE TRIM 2 1/2" TAPE 409 92762
DECORATIVE TRIM 2 1/2" TAPE 818 92784
DECORATIVE TRIM 2 1/2" TAPE 308 92758
Although I have never found ready-made curtain panels to suit my needs, if you have found some (please share!), then adding this trim is a great way to jazz them up and make them look custom.

Weekend Find!

I've always loved the look of framed scarves.  The vivid colors, beautiful silk, and vibrant patterns really can function as art in a room.

For instance:

So as I was out hunting this weekend, this caught my eye.

It was large, about 40-inches square in the frame.  It looked like Hermes, but at first glance I didn't see any identifying words on it.  I looked more closely, and I could see the very top of the tag on the back and read "Fabrique in France."  A good sign indeed!  So I kept hunting for the Hermes word on it.  I finally found it towards the bottom, somewhat hidden in the elaborate pattern (keep in mind that I have to do this searching in a nonchalant manner because if I look too excited or interested, the price suddenly goes way up....)  So then I started hunting online to see if I could find the same scarf and know that it is real.  Sure enough, a quick google of "black hermes les tuileries scarf" confirmed it was the real deal!

I went to ask about it, and the man in charge said that it was already sold (hence the lot numbers on the tag- those aren't prices).  My heart sank.  Then he said, "But I bought it and will sell it to you.  It is a nice silk scarf."

I asked him his price, and when he said it I knew that he was pricing it only as a "nice silk scarf," nothing more.  I faked a pause of hesitation before saying I would take it.  So home it came with me!  It's at the framer now- the glass was broken, so I'm having the frame repaired and a new glass put in (which probably makes up for my bargain on the scarf, because a 40-inch square is not inexpensive to frame).  I can't wait to pick it up next week!

Did you have any good weekend finds?

Shared Rooms

It's been a rough week in our house.  The stomach flu hit, and it was brutal.  Sick babies, loads after load of laundry, cancelling client installations, and when I thought it couldn't get worse, I caught the stomach flu, too.  Taking care of sick babies when you are sick yourself (and pregnant) is rough.  Thankfully I think we have rounded a corner and are on the mend.

Just as things seem to be calming down a little, I'm thinking of throwing a wrench into all our routines.  Baby #3 is coming this spring, and I'm seriously considering moving 17-month old Sally in with her 3-year old brother.  Our 4th bedroom is downstairs and is rather isolated from the rest of the bedrooms.  That makes it perfect for a guest room, but for a nursery or small child's bedroom, it isn't ideal.  This week has been a perfect example of how my children still need us close at night.

My biggest (selfish) concern is that they won't nap anymore if they are in the same room together at naptime.  If anyone has any tips for making this transition, or good or bad experiences to share, I'd love to hear.  When my sister and I were a little older (like 5 and 3), we chose to share a room and loved it for many years.  But 17-months and barely-3 is young.  Too young?

I am excited about the prospect of them sharing a room and being a really close brother and sister, playing together all the time, etc.  And I am excited about the prospect of decorating their room.  Here are some rooms that have caught my eye...
