Say It Ain't So

I've had a long-standing love affair with the glamorous Dorothy Draper Espana chest.  I use one in my bedroom, and it instantly adds style to the room.

My chest isn't marked.  It's from the 1960's, high quality, has dovetail drawers, etc.  The fact that it isn't Heritage doesn't really bother me.

However, seeing it knocked off by Pier 1 absolutely shocks me.

It's not cheap (for what I imagine the quality to be)- $400 plus shipping.  But it is just all wrong.  From the hardware to the legs to the fact my beloved Dotty is hitting the VERY mainstream market...

If you are vigilant, you can find a chest for not-too-much-more than the Pier 1 price.  I believe that is about what I paid for mine, on eBay.

So is the Draper chest going the way of chevron, beni ourain, and starburst mirrors?  Please say it ain't so!

Girl, I know the feeling. Drives me bonkers. For whatever it's worth, your room looks amazing. And, you know you had it before Pier 1 made it mainstream :).

isn't this just the law of supply and demand - people love the look of the DD Chest/ cabinet and so they are providing it again.
I say its better than a lot of furniture produced today so you have to be happy about that

Kind Regards

Yikes! There is only one Dorthy Draper. I would much rather have an original piece of hers than buy the Pier 1 version.

I found the Heritage chests at a local resale shop and paid $300 a piece! Honestly, the real thing just makes the knock off look like a knock off! I love me the real deal!

short answer: yes
these companies hire people to read blogs like yours, Pinterest, etc.
they then knock off what is most popular
consumers get "the look" and then it goes out of style and there is a new look.
the trend cycle is shorter and shorter.
that is why we should be buying what we love and forget about trends!

I completely agree. I can remember like yesterday scoring mine at a flea market in 2010 - here's a post about it:
Your room looks gorgeous!

Let's start with your bedroom - gorgeous! How have I not seen it before? And I saw the knock off DD on another blog last week. Surprised to see that - didn't think it was so mainstream.
