Shades of Gray

I am not a gray person.  When gray first became popular several years ago, I figured I would never use it in my home.  Like maxi dresses and dark fingernails, I liked gray for other people, but not for me.  Gray just had always seemed a bit lifeless and cold to me.

While I still don't really have gray in my house, I am warming to the idea.  While it may sound like an unlikely match, I particularly like gray when it is paired with gold accents.  Gold acts as a warm counterpoint to the cool shades of gray, and the pairing of gold and gray also lends an undeniably glamorous element to the room.

Let's take a look.

Do you like the combination of gold and gray?

I'm so glad to hear I'm not the only one who doesn't like the current trend of gray walls and furnishings! I once moved into an apartment where the landlord had mistakenly painted all the walls gray: Clinical depression within days! Definitely the wrong color for me. Fine in clothing, just not the color for decor.
Nevertheless, I love your idea of pairing gray and gold. Yes, lovely warm gold, a metal that always seems 'alive' to me somehow, counteracts dead [souless?] gray wonderfully. I still don't think I could live in a gray room, but I love those examples you chose.

I LOVE grey and gold. Throw in a little bit of pale pink or canary yellow and I'm a happy, happy girl...

I love gray and love it even more with gold/brass. Thanks for pointing that out!

I love grey used sparingly - I just did a place with predominantly white, black, gold with touches of grey and chartreuse. It's great for a space where you're balancing masculine and feminine I think.

btw I loved that image with the stools covered in some sort of hide at the foot of the bed! -Boo

I have always loved bright, cheerful interiors, but have found that gray makes a wonderful backdrop for said hues. For years, every time I moved I would immediately do the walls in Benjamin Moore's sidwalk gray. It was a soft, subtle shade that took on a blue cast in the morning, white around noon, and a touch of lavender at night. It felt lively and warm - not too dark. The DC Design House this year has almost the entire lower story in gray! The designers told me it wasn't planned. One room, in particular, was in gray and ORANGE to great effect. Worth checking the house out if you're thinking of going with gray - it will really give you a feel for the possibilities.
