The Kate Effect

With the royal wedding approaching in just a few weeks, all eyes are on Kate Middleton lately- and for good reason. She seems to successfully be walking a fine line- one one hand she's classic, and her wardrobe befits someone about to join the royal family, and on the other hand, she still manages to come off as someone who cares a great deal about modern style. I keep reading about how her fashion choices are creating frenzies, for example...

She wore this Burberry trench a few weeks ago (from the current season's collection) and it sold out in hours! I couldn't even find it online. I love how the ruffle at the bottom makes it almost dress-like.

Apparently she raided her own wardrobe for her engagement portrait and wore this white Reiss Dress from a season or two ago. I heard they are re-introducting the dress in the US. There's a Reiss in Georgetown and I always forget it's there- I need to stop by and check out their dresses! I've long been a fan.

And then there's Issa. Kate has basically succeeded in making the Brazilian designer a household name...she's been wearing her dresses for years. I love this long peach gown that shows off Kate's slender figure.

And then, of course, there's this Issa dress, which the whole world knows by now...

You can pick up Issa at Net a Porter- the jersey dresses look so comfortable yet chic. Sort of like a more modern, elegant DVF style. I can see this wrap-effect silk jersey dress being great for going from the office to cocktails...

Maybe Kate will slip into this silk chiffon gown for the Royal Wedding after-party (ha)!

Of course, Kate's been mum about who her dress designer will be for the big day...we can't wait for the big reveal!

I am all for anyone who is going to be a poster child for classy ladylike dressing again! If she means sold out fashions..so be it. She has great style and hopefully will encourage throngs of young girls to start understanding the "understated less is more" asthethic of a time gone by......shes a lovely young woman and role model!

We should not be too harsh on poor Kate – she is probably, as you have pointed out, just conforming to the ‘royal way of life’. However, I think Kate will continue with the preppy look unless some forward thinking British designer takes her under his or her wing and pushes her onto the front row.
