Can Anyone Recommend an Upholsterer in the DC Area?

*Update--thank you for your comments and emails, everyone...feel free to keep them coming. I'm going to compile all these recommendations in a post next week so everyone will have this info. Y'all are the best- thank you!*

Throwing this one our to our knowledgeable readers...my yellow chair has the most wonderful shape and beautiful wood patina...but I'm over the yellow fabric it came with. I'm looking for someone in the metro DC area to reupholster it. I have a car so the VA or MD 'burbs are fine. I don't think this is a terribly hard project- far less involved than reupholstering a couch or an armchair. If I were really ambitious and had the time I could probably tackle it myself- but I'd rather spend a bit of money and have it done right the first time!

Leave a comment or email mattersofstyle@gmail.com with tips. Thank you!

We send our customers to Spicers & Sons off Duke Street just outside Old Town Alexandria and I have a friend who highly recommends Old Town Upholstery on Rt. 1 in Alexandria. Hope that helps! Amy

I have not used these places, but I too am looking... Spicer's in Old Town Alexandria and Yi's in Rockville are both keep coming up as good places. I have gone to Yi's and the fabric selection is ginormous, I haven't been to Spicer's. Good luck and let us know who you choose and how they did. BTW, most stores will pick up and deliver your furniture, no need for you to drag it around.

A friend used Jose Goncalves in Arlington exclusively. They do wonderful work and are conveniently located on Lee Highway - so not far from the District!

A little further to drive, but Creations by Taylor in Edgewater (near Annapolis) is also recommended.

YES - YES - I know the person to call. Mel Stokols of StyleRite Upholstery, Annandale, 703.256.1114.

You can see what he did w/Kelly Wearstler's fern tree fabric on my sofa (link below) . He's also done 3 chairs for me. Top notch & a wonderful person to boot. I wouldn't call anyone else. If you call him - tell him I referred you. He really is the best and always comes himself to pick-up and deliver your piece.

I was going to say StyleRite too! Good luck and I can't wait to see the results!

I used G Street Fabrics to make a slipcover for my sofa, and it is gorgeous - you would never know that it wasn't original. At certain times in the year, they have specials on slipcovering/upholstery, during which they discount their fabric by 20% and offer deep discounts on the upholstery labor as well. Good luck!

oh my gosh - i have the BEST upholster ever and he is INCREDIBLY reasonably priced! His name is Paul Johnson and his company is called Paul David Designs. He does all the work for the Loudoun Design Center and some work for Lauren Liess of Pure Style Home as well. He's done my roman shades, pillows, ottomans and several stuff for my mother! CALL HIM! :)

I'm biased, but the CALICO CORNERS stores have top-notch upholsterers who pick up and deliver--and the quality of the work is guaranteed. Even if you go elsewhere to have the work done, look at Calico for fabrics. Their selection is much more fashion forward and you can borrow large samples or mini-bolts to try at home before making a decision. And, they have a big sale coming up in early March--both fabrics and custom labor will be on sale.

Forgot to mention that Calico Corners has stores in northern Virginia in Old Town Alexandria, Fairfax, Arlington and Great Falls plus Rockville, MD.
