Makeup for Dummies

When I say "dummies," I'm primarily referring to myself. There are a couple of things I'm good at - I can sew a handbag from scratch, I can edit HTML code, and I can write you a pretty persuasive legal memorandum - but one thing that is decidedly absent from my list of fortes is eye makeup. I'm always too lazy to get out 5 different little pots of eyeshadow and even if I do work up the motivation I have no flippin' clue how to blend them. So when I saw this bad boy at Walgreens the other day, I bit -  hook, line, and sinker...

The above palette are not the colors I purchased- mine are more subdued for everyday wear. But the fact that they tell me which color goes on the lid, which on the crease, which on the brow bone, and which on the outer corner, is a HUGE help. It's like paint by numbers for your face, ha. I stick with department store brands for most makeup- I will not stray from Laura Mercier's tinted moisturizer, or MAC's Lipglass- but with eye shadow I figure there's room for a little (inexpensive) fun. So if you're in need of a little guidance, give this a try.

I usually stay away from "trends" in cosmetics and just buy what I think looks best on me, but one area I still try to experiment a bit is nail polish. I'm loving some new colors this fall that aren't the normal blah beige/taupe/pink sitting in my medicine cabinet. Peacock blue is one of my favorite colors, so maybe I need to bring it to my nails...

For something similar, try Nars Midnight Express, which is one of their vintage colors they're re-introducing for a limited time.

I've been using gray polish on my fingers and toes lately and loving its versatility. Here it is on the Chanel runway.

I bought Rimmel, but I'm not loving the texture of it. I didn't realize when I bought it that it was one of those ultra long wear colors that often have a really matte texture. So instead, maybe try Essie's Merino Cool.

I wish I could say the I snapped the below picture of myself last night when I was blogging. But who am I kidding - my nails have NEVER looked that good! Loving the metallic chrome polish.

How about Dior Gold Revolution for something similar- a metallic steel gold. So fun for the holidays coming up.

I love Trish McEvoy's makeup planners. They keep everything organized. I wear all Trish except for mascara- L'Oreal Telescopic mascara is AMAZING. And cheap!

I have a eye shadow compact from Cargo (you can get it at Sephora) that has the instructions (brow, crease, lid, outer corner) indented into the shadow. I love it!

My favorite nail polish (for the moment) is a gorgeous peacock blue from Sally Hansen. It's from the Complete Manicure (or something like that) line, and the name is actually "Fairy Teal." Terrible name, yes, but the color is GORGEOUS. The last time I wore it someone stopped me on the street to ask about it. I also have a light grey-purple-y tone from the same line called "Commander in Chic," and a navy called "Thinking of Blue," both of which are equally fabulous. As often as I change my nail polish, I won't buy spendy brands--I think the drugstore brands are just as nice and a much better deal!

PS love your blog and sorry for the forever-long comment! :)
