It's the little things

Things may be peachy keen in the blogosphere day after day, but we're all to aware that out in the real world, most of us are facing issues more serious than than which wallpaper to choose or whether Krylon works better than Rustoleum. A lot of people out there are facing tough and uncertain economic times, and most everyone we know has been affected by the economic downturn in one way or another.

Like most people, we're not spending big these days, but are happily focusing on the everyday little splurges that can brighten our day and feel like a treat. So today we bring you our favorite "little things" we love, all of which involve little to no expense. We can't wait to hear yours!

1) A meal at Chic-fil-a. Something about Chic-fil-a just makes us happy. Maybe it's the salty waffle fries, maybe it's their styrofoam cups that keep our diet cokes cold longer, maybe it's the fact their employees say "my pleasure." In any event, we'll take a #7 meal (chargrilled chicken sandwich) over a pricey sit down lunch any day!

2) Freshly laundered and ironed bedding. There's something so soothing about slipping into a freshly made bed with nice crisp sheets and an ironed duvet. It makes us feel like we're staying at a hotel! And if you're your own laundress, then this little luxury is definitely free...and while you iron you can watch bad TV and not feel guilty about it!

3) An evening of wine and shelter magazines. A cheap bottle of Malbec, the newest HB or Elle Decor, some Pandora playing in the background. Hard to move me off the couch on those evenings!

4) A great thrifting or Craigslist find. We've said it before and we'll say it again- the thrill of the hunt when we're out shopping is much more important to us than the amount of money we spend. Scoring a coral jewelry holder for $2.99 is infinitely more gratifying than spending $299 in a department store.

5) Taking a walk down memory lane. Sometimes, figuring out where you're going in life involves looking backwards rather than forwards. We love pulling out pictures of our families from back in the day, or displaying old pictures on a gallery wall, to remind us how blessed our lives have been. It certainly reminds us that we are both lucky girls! Now if only pigtails were still in...

So tell us, what are your "little things" that help you savor life?

I knew I loved the MOS girls! So good to hear someone else shares Chick-fil-A and malbec as fixtures in their lives - and I just had my powder room papered in a Cowan & Tout paper this week (not the bamboo, but another fave). I'm also an attorney and a mommy, and I also love some trashtastic TV (say, anything on Bravo), even if I have to iron to feel less guilty about watching it. Another cheap thrill and staple in my house - Nutella! Sadly, I think I could eat a jar in a sitting....

What a great post! I am definitely all about Chick-fil-a (although I'm not restrained enough to go with the grilled chicken option) and a night with a glass of wine and shelter mags. My favorite little thing, however, is a simple dinner cooked at home with my family and good friends at the table. It doesn't have to cost a lot, and it's always so much fun.

Great post! I love that bed in the picture with the glorious O&L Tamara- I just featured the wallpaper version on my blog and it looks amazing on the bed- want!! The little things for me are a hot bath with the shelter mags and a glass of either chardonnay or shiraz- Or a trip to the designer wallpaper/fabric stores downtown that I can spend an hour or two by myself and dream of papering/upholstering my whole house- definitely my favourite way to spend 'me' time...and mostly, the hour before my kids go to bed when we snuggle and read stories together- favourite part of my day.

I have been reading your blog for quite sometime and I just saw that picture of the little girl in her Gulf Stream School uniform. I can't believe it but I spent 11 years at Gulf Stream School and had to wear that exact same uniform and carry that exact same book bag. I was there from Montessori 3 to 8th Grade and I grew up in Gulf Stream right on Polo Drive, my parents still have their house there! Is that your daughter? What a small world! Would love to connect with you!

All the best,

Tiernan Ely

What a great reminder that the little things in life are what count...for me that would be a night on the sofa with my precious kitty curled up on my lap watcihng TV, or connecting with my girlfriends from high school over a simple meal, or a walk hand in hand with my hubby...or watering my plants! And when I really need a boost and don't want to spend a ton of $, I buy new lipstick!! BTW...you were the most adorable little one and I bet you are even cuter now!! Great post!

That is THE most adorable pic of that little girl! Is that you? How precious. Love, love the pigtails.
Super great post today. Totally agree with so many of your favorite "little things" in life. Yummmm, I think Chick-fil-a is in order for lunch today while I'm out and about.
BTW, that Cowan & Tout Bamboo wallpaper is the bomb. Fantastic! I can only dream and drool....

Okay, ditto on the Chik-Fil-A, but for me, it's their large unsweet tea.. with a brownie. Yum!

Simple pleasures: shelter mags and a long bath at the end of the day (EVERY day) or reading a good book on my last big purchase: my "boiled shrimp-colored" velvet sofa. And the biggest simply pleasure: baby-sitting my cousin's children and enjoying their laughter and smiles. It's amazing how they recharge me after a bad week.

You had me at Chik-Fil-A!! Sometimes it is all about the little pleasures in life. At our local spot, not only do they say "my pleasure", they come out to our table to refill our drinks and take our trays to the trash!!

My other personal pleasure is a nice, uninterrupted conversation with my grandma...still so chic at 90 she is my best friend!!

I totally love this post! I get a large Coke from Chic-fil-A pretty much every day. Yep, I take the real deal -- sugar AND caffeine. Tell me though -- do you really iron your sheets? I'm all about the freshly laundered, but I just cannot do the ironing.
