I'm Dreaming of a Striped Christmas

Sometimes my mind connects the dots in rather odd ways. I was reading this article yesterday about the recent Audrey Hepburn clothing auction in London, and spied this timeless Mark Cross nautical stripe top Audrey wore in War and Peace.

Historic: A Mark Cross red and white striped top worn by the actress in the 1957 film War and Peace

The Audrey auction, coupled with the fact that I've been looking at this view all week as I spend some time in North Carolina, reignited my obsession with striped tops and sweaters.

Since I'm pretty certain Mark Cross doesn't make clothing anymore, I wondered where I could get something similar, and then I remembered some gorgeous striped shirts I saw this summer while shopping around Edgartown in Martha's Vineyard.

Problem was, I had neglected to take note of the brand. I remembered they were classic, heavy weight, and not inexpensive (about $80-$125 per shirt). A little googling around and I discovered that it was classic French brand Saint James I was after. Established in Lower Normandy in 1889 as a producer of fisherman's sweaters, these shirts are the real deal when it comes to nautical stripes.

On the top of my wish list is the gorgeous Pont Raye sweater for these recent chilly days...I love love love the way it is layered here with a collared shirt underneath.

I'd top it off with the crisp and cozy Blizzard jacket (on sale!)

Of course, the Pont Raye is followed closely by the ridiculously chic Lezardriux t-shirt (love the little slits on the inside of the sleeves, and the buttons on one side of the body!)

For truly relaxed days, I'd call on the unisex Naval II for kicking around town or taking a leisurely bike ride.

Come spring I'd love to accessorize with a the cotton jersey Eva Echarpe scarf, but in the meantime I should probably stick to the Scarf Rayee since it's wool!

Next time I'm in New York I'll be stopping off at their flagship store on Madison the meantime I may just have to treat myself to a striped shirt to banish these winter blues...who says you can't have summer all year round?

Fabulous post! I watched "Coco Avant Chanel" on the plane from Europe and one of the most inspiring outfits was her simple boat-stripe shirt. Classic and chic.

Peter Beaton might be the brand you're thinking of on MV. I know they have a store on Nantucket. They have fabulous sailor shirts in that price range.
