Crewel Intentions

Crewel is a beautiful form of embroidery that has been around for years.  While it is a classic embroidery style, it seemed to disappear for a while.  But we are thrilled to see it resurfacing in magazines, fabric stores, and even in easily accessible stores like Anthropologie and Pottery Barn.

How beautiful are the crewel chair covers and drapes in this Tobi Fairley dining room?  We love how she paired the traditional crewel design with a more modern mirror, chandelier, and lamps.

There is so much we love about this room!  From the venetian mirror to the pair of white chinoiserie tables to the blue-and-white Lee Jofa crewel armchairs.  Crewel adds such a nice layer of dimension to this room!

This is a rather traditional, formal room, and the pair of crewel floral chairs are a beautiful touch.  They add some texture to the room.

If you would like to add some crewel to your own home, how about these options?

This cane crewel rug from Williams-Sonoma Home is such a fun, modern twist on the classic crewel pattern.  LOVE.
Cane Crewel Rug, $700 for 9x13

You know how much we love coral!  This rug is perfect with the coral grasscloth walls and shiny chrome floor lamp.  As soon as this shows up at the Pottery Barn outlet, it's mine...
Coral Crewel Rug, $500 for 9x13

Crewel is perfect for bedding.  We would probably add some modern elements to the room to keep things fresh and youthful, but isn't this a perfectly soothing color palette for a bedroom?

Medallion Crewel Coverlet

This turquoise crewel pillow is absolutely fabulous!  And haven't you heard that turquoise is Pantone's 2010 Color of the Year?  We fully approve!

These graphic crewel pillows would be so cute to add some color to any room!  The yellow is our favorite.
This navy and white crewel armchair is beautiful.  The dark wood and nailhead trim compliment the pattern perfectly.
Neiman Marcus Blue Crewel Chair, $2,000

This color combination of Dzambul is our favorite.  Yes, it is expensive, but you could do something small with it like a pillow or bench.
 Brunschwig and Fils Dzhambul

Another fabulous modern twist on traditional crewel.  The bright colors and paisley pattern are so unexpected on this French style chair!
 Anthro Antwerp Chair, $1700

This round rug with a gorgeous colors and birds might be our favorite crewel accessory that we have found.  We have never used a round rug before, but if we were to use one, it would be this one.

Conure Rug, $600 for 8' round

This bench would be so pretty at the foot of your bed!  The turned legs are so elegant!

 Anthropology Altai Ottoman, $998

For a touch of crewel, these throw pillows are so fun and colorful.

How gorgeous is this antique crewel wallhanging?  It will add a fabulous vintage accent to your room.  This original crewel piece can be yours today from the MoS Store!  And don't forget, save 20% when you purchase it before Friday!

I've also noticed that crewel is making a comeback which I'm thrilled about. Further evidence craftsmanship is going to continue to be so much more important in 2010.
