We at MoS have a few design weaknesses, and one of them is definitely faux bamboo furniture. We absolutely love it! And we absolutely love DIY projects. Faux bamboo furniture is classic- it was popular in the 60's, and by scouring eBay, craigslist, and estate sales, you can find some great older pieces, often at affordable prices, that are just begging for a little DIY love. Or, you can spend $1,550 on this nightstand from Williams-Sonoma Home. Yes, it has a Carrara marble top. But when you think about a pair costing well over $3,000, that is hard to justify!

Especially when you can get something similar for so much less. All you need is a bit of DIY inspiration (we're always inspired by Eddie Ross's amazing before and afters, http://www.eddieross.com/), a little bit of time and patience to search around for a good deal, and a little (ok, sometimes a lot) of elbow grease.
Enter this chest I found at the Goodwill Outlet (yes, the final resting place for whatever doesn't sell at the Goodwill "retail" stores). The one in Charlotte is located at 2901 Freedom Drive. I almost didn't see it because it was obscured by a baby bathtub (really!) sitting on top of it. But thankfully I did a "twice over" and saw the potential beneath the bathtub. $12 later, it was mine. First order of business was to CLEAN CLEAN CLEAN it. Next, I sanded it to remove the yellowish paint and scratches. Then I cleaned it again.
Next came a coat of primer.
Finally, time to paint. I originally painted it a white white and painted the original hardware black. But the white was just too white.
So I went over it with a couple coats of SW Honey White, and that was perfect. Stark white can be a little blinding sometimes! And, voila! The finished product:So $12 for the chest and $3 worth of paint, I have all of $15 invested and love it (take that, W-S Home)! And best of all, I can pretty much guarantee that no one else in the world has a piece like this! I am thinking it is just right for my entryway. What do you think? Tip: Styling your furniture is the icing on the DIY cake! Don't forget that adding personal items like a pretty lamp, a vase of flowers, or some fun coffee table books is the perfect finishing touch for your DIY masterpiece.
