April Showers...and Flowers

April is one of those months that can only be described as an awful tease. One day it's a balmy sixty five degrees, not a cloud in the sky. You find yourself gleefully putting away your winter coats and unearthing your colorful spring and summer pieces from the back of the closet. You go out to lunch and sit outside, relishing every ray of sunlight hitting your skin. You even contemplate putting on a bathing suit. Until...you wake up the next day, it's suddenly gone back to being forty five degrees, drizzling rain, and just all around yucky. This cycle has repeated itself more than a few times this month here in Washington, and in plenty of other east coast cities, I'm sure.
The best defense against unpredictable mother nature is putting on a cheerful, lightweight spring coat that will provide a dash of color on gloomier days, and also look perfectly suitable for days that end up a little warmer. Or, for something that will blend with most everything in your closet, there's always that eternal wardrobe staple to fall back on: the trench.
Below are some of our favorite trenches and accessories for spring. Whether you spend $20 or $1,000, all of these coats will be sure to add some spring to your step in the coming weeks!

Cheerful coral! We're loving this playful color. It looks fabulous with khaki, white, denim, black, gray, navy...you name it! Maybe coral is the new black? The ruffles on this jacket add a feminine, fun detail.
J Crew Frenchie Slicker, $165.
We love this special edition J Crew trench. The color is a tad bit darker than we'd prefer, but we love the classic, almost retro styling and the mid-thigh length. Throw on some oversized sunglasses and you have instant intrigue!
Icon Trench, J. Crew. $298
The gold standard: the Burberry Trench. Out of all the things in your wardrobe, this is probably the only one you'll still be wearing when you're 50.
$995. Neiman Marcus.
Tip: Check out Ebay for vintage Burberry trenches. Classic style without the hefty pricetag (although smaller sizes are hard to come by).

Something about turqouise just makes us happy. We'd scoop up this Old Navy pea coat and pick up some new buttons from a sewing or craft store on the way home to give it a custom touch. Perhaps something gold or enamel? In any event, this coat gets our vote for steal of the day!
Canvas Peacoat, Old Navy. $19.99
If you're looking for a turquoise jacket with a sportier edge that is a bit more of an investment, we love this Burberry one! It's a casual jacket, yet the drawstring at the waist and the cropped style keep it from looking sloppy. You could wear this to the office with black pants, or it would be so chic paired with white capris while running around town on Saturday. And for what it's worth, the MoS girls have most certainly gotten their money's worth from their Burberry jackets. They are purchases we would make over and over again. Burberry Cinched Side Jacket, Neiman Marcus. $495.

Leave it to Target-zay to come out with an adorable trench! The price is right ($45), and we just love the yellow and white plaid! It would be so cute with navy or white (really anything other than those "blah" pants in the picture!). And, of course, it also comes in our favorite navy.
Merona Trench, Target, $45.
And if you don't have a hood, then you definitely need this cute little Tory Burch umbrella in an unmistakable Tory Burch print! Almost makes you hope it rains.

3T Tory Umbrella, $45 http://www.toryburch.com/

Finally, if you are planning to splash in any puddles, you can't go wrong with some Hunter wellies. They are $117 at http://www.shoes.com/, but a MoS girl saw them yesterday at Off Fifth for $69.99 minus 30%. Lots of sizes and fun glittery colors! And like your Burberry trench, these classic wellies have real staying power.
So grab your favorite coat, your Tory Burch umbrella, and your rain boots, and bring on the April showers! Have a stylish weekend!
